Owners' Flights & Experiences
The first 3 months.

I thought I would reflect on the first three months of operation with our new Phenom 100. We took delivery of S/N 84, N725MW (N600CS now), on December 4, 2009. We purchased our aircraft through Eagle Creek Aviation in Indianapolis. Matt Hagans and I traveled to Brazil to take delivery, which went very smoothly. We had a mechanically squawk free airplane at delivery, and I can't thank Matt enough for making the whole delivery process a pleasant experience.

We now have 80 hours on our aircraft. There has not been one squawk since we have taken delivery, aside from the very few spurious CAS messages now and then. I am very impressed with this aircraft so far.

We also own a Beechcraft Premier 1, which we have operated for 7 years. Although I like the aircraft, our experience has been a bit different over the years. We had 13 squawks at delivery, and if I can get 20 hours on the airplane before it needs to go in the shop we're doing good. All of the avionics are located outside the pressure vessel which causes many of the issues we face from day to day. The electronics get cold soaked and wet, and failures are common.

As with any new airplane, especially jets, there will always be a few mechanical problems from time to time. Time will tell how Embraer responds to these issues. We have taken delivery of 5 brand new airplanes over the years, and the Phenom 100 has been by far the best experience so far. The airplane is built very well, and it flies very nicely.

As far as Eagle Creek Aviation, those guys are great to work with. I highly recommend sending them some business. Finding a team like that is rare these days. This first three months has been a fantastic experience thanks to a great aircraft and a great team at Eagle Creek Aviation. Thanks Matt! Thanks Embraer!

Cabin & Flight Deck
Aftermarket mods

Has anyone seen or heard of aftermarket modifications or STCs for the Phenom 100. Especially cabin seat upgrades?

Operations & Performance
Optimizing Speed, Range and Costs

I've just posted a short paper, "Phenom 100: Optimizing Speed, Range and Costs", that discusses performance and economy issues. Don't expect any tremendous insights beyond what most of us already know, but it might be helpful to pulling these ideas together for the transitioning jet pilot. I've also found that after flying with a number of different pilots, many have different, and conflicting, ideas about these basic issues.

The paper uses graphs to illustrate the effect of various power settings, for example:

Phenom 100 True Air Speed

The paper is available at the URL below. As always, corrections and comments are encouraged.

WAAS & Advanced IFR Seminar

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to personally invite you to attend my next WAAS/Advanced IFR Refresher Seminar in Lakeland, FL on Feb. 19th. This will be the 9th presentation of this seminar, but the first for 2010. Lakeland (KLAL) has a great airport and FBO facility. It is also a nice central location…less than an hour’s flying time from nearly anywhere in central or south FL.

2-19 - THE SEMINAR: A continental-style breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks will be provided at the seminar. The actual teaching portion will begin at 9am. We should be done by 4:30pm or so (depending on the number of questions and the discussions they generate).

All the details about the seminar can be read on my website via the links below. Again, let me point out…this seminar is open to anyone interested in WAAS operations and/or just looking for an in-depth IFR refresher. For the WAAS portions, I’ll specifically discuss the Garmin 400W/500W series, G500-G1000, Perspective, Avidyne Entegra, and R9 avionics (as required). While you may notice from my website that I primarily specialize in Cirrus aircraft, please note that this seminar is NOT Cirrus-specific and is open to anyone. Past seminars have had in attendance, pilots flying: Piper Mirage/Meridian/Matrix, Bonanza/Baron, Citations and various VLJ's, Mooney, Twin Cessna, Experimental & even helicopters (etc). So, invite all your flying buddies to join us. The more the merrier and the better the exchange of thoughts and discussions within the class.

General information about the seminar itself and what previous attendees have to say about it is here: http://www.progaviation.com/seminar.htm

Specific (detailed) information about the Lakeland seminar is here: http://www.progaviation.com/seminar/lakeland.htm

Anyone wishing to have a little better understanding of what this seminar is all about can view these clips, which were featured on the Aero News Network a few months ago (after ANN attended the seminar in March of 2009). Of course, they only scratch the surface of what is taught/presented in the seminar. The seminars contents have also been updated, refined, and expanded since this footage was shot. We'll talk about much more than just WAAS as that subject is one with many, many tangent topics. Please feel free to pass this on to others you think might have interest in attending. In the past, many pilots have shared rides (and fuel expenses) to/from the seminar. I look forward to seeing many of you there. Fly Safe.

Piston vs Jet Roll Indicator

I've had a couple of emails asking about my comments that the Roll Indicator at the top of the Phenom's PFD acts opposite to that of piston aircraft.

It does indeed. Click on the link below to see a wiki posting discussing this.
